Motivation

The IFIP TC2 Academy TCSL Summer School on Open Source and Web Technology is being planned to take place on 22-23 February 2008 co-located with IEEE DEST 2008 (http://www.ieee-dest.curtin.edu.au/2008/index.php). This is a timely event involving international community of scientists, engineers, and practitioners interested in the state of the art of research and practice in the emerging field of Open Source and Web Technology. This event will provide input and guidance on the direction, scope, and importance of different aspects of the fields. It will provide students with knowledge and information, among them, advancements in Open Source and Web Technology.  The summer school will be held in collaboration with Thai Computer Science Linkage (TCSL). The TCSL is a linkage between Digital Ecosystems and Business Intelligence Institute (DEBII) Curtin University and a group of Thai public university computer science academics who originally formed the linkage in 2000 with Monash University following the Thai-Australia Science and Engineering Assistance Project, 1998-2001.

Special focus is aimed at looking at some of application areas of interest for Open Source, Web Technology including logistics, tourism, and e-government. The Web has now been in existence for quite some time and it is pervasive in its influence on all aspects of society and commerce. It has also produced a major shift in our thinking on the nature and scope of information processing. However in its technological nature and its supporting theoretical foundations, it has remained relatively rudimentary, being currently largely suitable for information dissemination. It is rapidly moving away from this, to application deployment and knowledge deployment that require complex interactions and properly structured underlying semantics. This has been a sudden upsurge of research activity in the problems associated with adding semantics to the Web. This work on semantics will involve data, knowledge, and process semantics. Open Source Software (OSS) development continues to emerge, grow, and spread as a global phenomenon that spans and connects culture, technology, and organization. OSS is one of the most exciting and controversial technologies of modern times that is stimulating scholarly research and practice and popular debate in many disciplines.

Audience

The IFIP TC2 Academy TCSL Summer School is intended for graduate students and researchers or for researchers in IT or from neighbouring disciplines, as well as for industrial researchers and practitioners from the ASEAN group of countries. The lecture materials will also be designed to provide a reference point for students and research candidates.  The lecturers at the school are leading IFIP experts in their own fields and their course subjects strongly reflect the research work for which they are well known.

Proposed Lectures
    • Trust & Security (Prof Tharam Dillon)
    • Open Source Software (Prof Ernesto Damiani)
    • Ontologies for Web Information Systems and Applications (Prof Robert Meersman)
    • Business Intelligence  (Prof Elizabeth Chang)
    • Thai guest speaker - to be confirmed
